Dear all,

Please forward this message on to those in your Company or Association who have familiarity or experience with compiling and publishing reports related to a company’s EH&S and sustainability efforts.

Many stakeholders and groups are increasingly calling for chemical companies to report in a more focused way on the “material” topics for the individual company.  (“Material” topics for a company are the topics that have a direct or indirect impact on its ability to create, preserve or erode economic, environmental and social value for itself, its stakeholders and society at large.)

While it is always an individual prerogative of each company to identify its own set of material topics for public reporting purposes, we at ICCA believe that this offers the chemical industry an opportunity for progressive leadership by being proactive in drafting a set of common “material” issues for the chemical industry.  A common industry effort offers the benefits of a stronger unified voice providing recommendations, and helps mitigate the risk that other organizations with competing agendas will attempt to define “materiality” with inadequate industry input.

We invite you (or another representative of your company or industry association) to participate in a 1-day workshop of global chemical industry experts and invited guests to be scheduled between September and November 2013 to develop a draft of a set of common “material” issues for the chemical industry that could be used as input for multi-stakeholder processes like the 2014 SASB development of a “Materiality Map” (scheduled to begin May 1).  The date and venue for the meeting will be chosen based on a consensus process among those expressing interest in participation.

We recommend that the representative from your company or association be a person who has familiarity or experience with compiling and publishing reports related to a company’s EH&S and sustainability efforts.  The workshop would begin with background on “materiality,” a review of previous work that has been done on this topic (e.g., WBCSD), and then move into facilitated input toward a draft of a set of common “material” issues for the chemical industry to be published by the end of 2013.  Possible follow-up conference calls may be scheduled as needed to complete the work as determined by the group.

The date and location for the workshop will be determined based on a consensus process among those who express interest in participation.  So that we can include you in scheduling the workshop date and location, please reply with your interest by July 29 to Anna Hitschler at
anna.hitschler@basf.com.  Should you have more specific questions about the workshop itself, please contact Mark Weick via e-mail at mcweick@dow.com or by telephone on +1 9896366501.
